Interacting

WHAT: Technology and the Internet tends to keep people at home, providing them with an interactive alternative to television and radio. Social networking has changed the way we interact. It extends our “neighbourhood” to the furthest corners of the globe, enabling friendships to develop among people who have never met face-to-face. Talk radio and interactive television also have moved toward greater interaction and programs that encourage feedback. Conversations revolve around common interests and concerns.

WHY: Being an active member of a community involves enabling people to have conversations and develop a sense of belonging. We all need to belong, and we all need to know that we are being listened to. It gives us a sense of worth. It helps us develop our own thinking and stimulates the process by which we make decisions. When we express ourselves in words or video we share a lot about who we are and what we value.

HOW: Interaction today has reached a new level with the advent of Web 2.0 – the broadband level of communication that we have come to expect. It is extended even further through mobile phone technology and the Smart phone in particular. People in relatively remote areas of the world can now be active participants in global conversations. We have never been so well connected! When the new technologies work together with the older technologies of radio and television we have a powerful combination.

Interaction also makes communication a more level playing field where we can all be active participants expressing views and opinions, sharing new discoveries on the Internet.  More than that, it empowers people to say what they think – and provides them a place to be heard in this new global community.

BIBLICAL BASIS: Jesus always engaged people in conversation. Reading accounts of his life and ministry we get the impression that he brought in a new relaxed style of interaction that people had not experienced before. He helped people feel that they had worth and that their opinions counted. He made  himself accessible and interruptible and had time for everyone.
